As a surf inspired brand, we realize that spending time in the sun and sea can really dry out a person’s skin. Once I went directly from surfing to meet someone at a restaurant and my friend pointed out how dry and scaly the skin on my arms was – thanks friend! Therefore, we believe it’s important to keep your skin hydrated, even with a thicker body butter, during the summer months as well as the cold winter months when dry skin is more prevalent.
There aren’t a whole lot of actual “body butters” out there for after sun care use, they’re more in the lotion category. However, we found a few that are actual body butters designated for after sun care as well as many others for dry skin. Some body butters we evaluated felt more like a cream and we evaluated some creams in the mix due to their high popularity – we were curious to find out.
This comprehensive review of body butters (18 here in this blog) wasn’t just based on some top sellers that we could cash in on with affiliate links (like most articles out there) or a paid sponsorship. We had a definite list of how we picked and reviewed our products.

The criteria we looked at to decide what products to review are below:
- In a tub format (you get most use of all product with this package format for a body butter)
- Had some sort of tropical or coconut fragrance (in addition to a few other well-known brands)
- Most products are sold on Amazon for consistent # of review analysis, but a few brands were purchased or used direct that aren't available on Amazon yet but were aligned with tropical scents, the ocean or after sun care uses.
- A mix of top sellers/top organic ranked products (for either tropical body butter or body butter on Amazon) as well as some smaller, newer entrants without many or any reviews and may not be known as well (as we like to support the small guys too – as we’re small/indie as well).

Best Body Butter Texture/Feel & Moisturization
I really prefer SURFCHIQUE's Surf Bum Body Butter and Pistache Body Butter the best. My preference is for more of a thick/dense texture for body butters (even whipped ones) but that easily melts into your skin and isn’t greasy. Both of these did the trick and were what I liked best!
Best Body Butter Scent
SURFCHIQUE's Surf Bum Butter is truly my favorite, as the coconut scent isn’t too sweet and balanced out by the vanilla and other fruity scents in the fragrance and the scent isn’t too overpowering. I also loved Kopari’s Tahitian Vanilla Body Butter as a runner up. Something about a bit of the spiciness to that vanilla smells amazing to me!
Best Body Butter for after sun care use
SURCHIQUE Surf Bum Butter & Pistache Body Butter! They are the only butters evaluated that include aloe (for skin soothing after being in the sun) & have a true body butter consistency (the thicker kind that I like best). Their scents were also my favorite, with the Pistache body butter having a stronger fragrance and SURFCHIQUE's Surf Bum Butter whipped body butter having a lighter, tropical coconut scent. Both of these body butters also stay away from those controversial parabens.

Tropical Body Butters – For After Sun Care (integrating Aloe as an ingredient for soothing after sun needs).
It’s important to note that these body butters are great for after sun care/hydration (being in the sun and having it dried out all day and slight redness). For sunburns that are more severe, it is recommended to use pure soothing ingredients without any oils or butters.
SURFCHIQUE Surf Bum Butter – surf inspired indie brand- Overall feel/moisturization
- This body butter looks like pristine white sand when you open the jar but there is no grittiness to it at all. The texture is super smooth and dense/thick but easily spreads and absorbs into skin without leaving greasy residue.
- Scent/Fragrance
- It feels like you’re back on the beach when applying this body butter. You get the biggest hit of fragrance when you’re putting it on but that’s when you enjoy fragrance the most, when applying and indulging in it. The scent isn’t too over-powering and is a nice light tropical fragrance that mixes the sweetness of coconut/vanilla with the citrus notes of mango and papaya to form a truly unique fragrance that I love.

- Overall feel/moisturization
- This body butter to me felt more like a cream. It applied nicely and didn’t leave any residue, so if you’re looking for something lighter, this could work.
- Scent/Fragrance
- This had more of a coconut/lime fragrance and to me leaned more toward the lime scent.
- Other notes: This product does include parabens, which SURFCHIQUE doesn’t have in their after sun care body butter. However, we don’t shout out all of the free-of claims as we don’t engage in fear marketing. Parabens have been linked to disrupting hormones/increasing the risk of cancer but nothing has been proven. We just avoid these ingredients but also don’t engage in fear marketing either.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This is definitely more of a body butter feel, thicker than Hawaiian Tropic but not as dense/thick as SURFCHIQUE’s bum butter or Pistachios body butter.
- Scent/Fragrance
- This was my favorite pure coconut fragranced body butter. I would have put this one in the coconut category but since it also has aloe for after sun care, I included it here. It’s not too sweet of a coconut and smells great!
- Other notes: This product also includes parabens, as noted above in the Hawaiian Tropic body butter overview
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This was definitely more of a lighter cream. It was very easy to spread and absorb so if you like that vs. thicker body butters, you’ll like it.
- Scent/Fragrance
- This was definitely more of a tropical/fruity fragrance vs. a sweeter coconut vibe. I definitely smelled a pineapple or something mixed in with the coconut fragrance.
- Other notes: This product also includes parabens, as noted above in the Hawaiian Tropic body butter overview.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This was definitely more of a lighter whipped body butter consistency. It absorbed very easily and was easy to apply.
- Scent/Fragrance
- This one was definitely more of a citrus type of tropical scent. A nice refreshing scent if you’re in the mood for something citrusy.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This body butter felt more like a cream with creamy consistency to me vs a whipped type of body butter.
- Scent/Fragrance
- Their coconut fragrance definitely had more of a lime twist in it.

- This is actually a cream, as stated in the title with creamy not buttery texture. We just included it in our body butter review as it is a brand that is also aligned with the beach/ocean and has a tropical vibe.
- Scent/Fragrance
- This is definitely more of a sea breeze/ocean fresh type of tropical fragrance. It actually reminds us of our salty sea breeze perfume oil.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This was more of a thicker cream or light whipped body butter texture. It absorbed easily and wasn’t greasy.
- Scent/Fragrance
- To me the scent just smelled like I was putting a candle on me, I think there was a waxy kind of scent that went along with the tropical fragrance that just smelled weird to me.
Coconut Scent Body Butters
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This body butter was definitely more of a true body butter and thicked/whipped consistency. It was easy to spread and absorbed well without leaving any residue.
- Scent/Fragrance
- This was definitely spot on coconut smell but definitely leaned toward a sweeter and richer pure coconut smell.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This is the truest form of an actual body butter that I looked at. It’s actually pretty firm and you need to really scoop it out with your fingers and get warm between your hands for it to apply easily and smoothly. However it’s definitely the richest/thickest body butter out there and that we’ve reviewed here so if that’s your thing, this body butter is for you.
- Scent/Fragrance
- This was similar smelling to the Trade Joes coconut body butter – a definite rich coconut fragrance.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This was a pure body butter, as in no water was used in the formula, however it still had a lighter consistency that The Body Shop’s body butter and also felt more like a cream or a light whipped body butter. It definitely moisturized well though and was easy to apply.
- Scent/Fragrance
- As the product name alludes to, it is true to its name, the scent was very much lime and coconut, skewing towards the lime from my perspective.

- Overall feel/moisturization
- As the product name says, it is much more a light cream than a body butter. It was easy to apply and wasn't greasy.
- Scent/Fragrance
- The fragrance was a bit too sweet of a coconut scent for me. Other reviewers have compared it to popcorn butter smell, but regardless it had a very candy like sweetness fragrance to it, if you’re into that kind of smell.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This body butter is definitely more of a cream consistency. Very easy to apply though and absorbs well and doesn’t leave any greasy residue.
- Scent/Fragrance
- The vanilla bean fragrance was nice smelling and wasn’t too sweet, a definite enjoyable scent.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This cream was definitely of a lighter, non-butter consistency. It seemed to moisturize pretty good and it claims to be able to tighten skin, etc. It may make skin look more tightened as in general moisturized skin looks better in general.
- Scent/Fragrance
- It’s definitely a great fragrance, I’m just not sure what the entire buzz is about as there are similar creams/butters with a similar scent but less expensive. I guess you’re just buying into the Brazilian life and all their great marketing materials make the cost worth it!
We wanted to compare this to Bum Bum cream since it's an actual body butter and has a similar scent profile to Bum Bum with pistachios. It also has aloe vera in it (our favorite skin soothing ingredient for after being in the sun), so could also be considered an after sun care body butter as well). Direct website here.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- I absolutely loved the texture/feel of this body butter. It was thicker and dense but I was able to spread it easily and it wasn’t greasy. This was one of my faves from an overall texture/feel and moisturization perspective.
- Scent/Fragrance
- I actually enjoy the fragrance of Pistachio’s body butter better than the Bum Bum cream, which it smells very similar too. Perhaps I just like the pistachio notes of Bum Bum’s cream the best. It was one of my top favorites from a scent perspective as well.
- Overall feel/moisturization
- This was definitely a lighter creamier texture, more like a thick lotion in a tub of body butter feel.
- Scent/Fragrance
- This is supposed to be a Bum Bum Dupe and it does smell pretty similar to Sol De Janiero’s Bum Bum cream. I prefer the scent of the Pistachio body butter better though, if you’re going for a dupe, however Tree Hut is the most efficiently priced of the 3.

- Overall feel/moisturization
- This body butter was definitely thicker and had a true whipped body butter feel/texture. It went on easy and wasn’t greasy – I just realized that rhymes!
- This is a great body butter and worth a premium price. The pricing section is at the bottom of this article. However, I need to bring it up here as well. I’m just bringing up pricing here because out of all the body butters I analyzed here. It’s almost double the price per ounce of any of them, even the higher priced Bum Bum cream.
- They try to justify their pricing by going into detail on how some of their ingredients are rare and need time to develop in order to justify their significantly higher price. I completely understand that ingredients can effect pricing but it would need to work a certain kind of magic for me to pay that price for a full bottle, which is why I only bought the 2 oz version to test! They are not the only offenders in this category, just the biggest one I've seen in this evaluation. Their small bottle size is about $15 per ounce but that even pales in comparison to something like La Mer (which goes into a whole story of how they need to play sounds in order for their ingredients to develop the right way) that is $30 for one ounce.
- I guess that’s why they can afford to drop $6K-$10K on one influencer video as they must have a huge marketing budget that they factor into the pricing of their product as well, but that’s not something they are going to reply with on social media/ad comments on their product/pricing.
- Scent/Fragrance
- They use all essential oils in their fragrances for their products which is another item that increases the cost of their product. This one definitely has a citrus fragrance to it. It’s a nice and enjoyable more fruity/tropical fragrance if you’re in the mood for that!
I got a free sample of this with another product I purchased that I showcased in the YouTube video review. I then later purchased their Tahitian Vanilla body butter which is the one I’m reviewing (that isn’t in the video)
- Overall feel/moisturization
- I love the consistency/feel of this product – it is very unique. It’s definitely a thicker and true body butter. However, there is something weird and somewhat slimy or slick feeling to it when you’re scooping the body butter out of the tub. It’s nothing good/bad, just weird and different. When applying though, it feels great like a regular whipped body butter and hydrates and moisturizes very well without being greasy.
- Scent/Fragrance
- I love the fragrance of this Tahitian Vanilla in their body butter. I’ve definitely gone through so many Tahitian Vanilla fragrance oils trying to re-create this fragrance myself but can’t seem to replicate it. In their visuals for this product, I realized there must be some other notes in their Tahitian Vanilla body butter that gives it that somewhat spicier scent that I love. This is definitely one of my top favorite body butters in regards to scent – sweet but with a bit of spiciness that rounds it out well.

For the ingredient analysis, we used our favorite ingredient tool, incidecoder,com to display all ingredients, their function, and the sites thoughts on them. You can copy/paste the ingredients on their site yourself, that we list below, if you want to dig deeper on more details behind the functionality of each ingredient.
Incidecoder typically will note if an ingredient is a goodie or a superstar ingredient as well as something icky. Incidecoder.com doesn't like fragrance and essential oils so those will always get an icky - but pending on % used (as in fragrance being lower on the ingredient list), if you're not sensitive to fragrances, shouldn't apply, it's just a personal preference.
Incidecoder doesn't list what types of ingredients are more expensive than others, so that is something to reference when looking at the price of a product.
Also, keep in mind that ingredients change and these were just pulled from the manufacturer’s website or packaging as of 1/16/23 so please reference actual packaging/website for latest updates on ingredients.
